Since 2001, IDAs in Michigan have impacted over 2100 families. The most recent Status of IDAS in Michigan(pdf) report shows that this program truly makes a difference and in so many areas of people’s lives. Even if an individual is not successful in purchasing their asset, the free training and counseling provided to all participants gives: a better understanding of financial management and banking products, a household budget, an understanding of “paying yourself first”, a life-long savings account, credit repair and debt management, and the list goes on.
As the program goes into its tenth year in Michigan, repeated funding resources are critical in order to keep it going. The recent passing of the IDA Tax Credit is a great opportunity for business and individuals to receive a tax credit and raise necessary program dollars for MIDAP. Beginning in October of 2010, MIDAP was asked to be a key partner in the Michigan Youth Opportunities Initiative (MYOI). To date, MYOI has opened over 1,000 IDAs in 30 counties using grant and Chafee funds. The need continues, and MIDAP’s role in the partnership is to apply the lessons and best practices we have learned with traditional IDAs to this initiative.
